There is a real physiological answer to when you should train, and there is a practical one, and they are not the same. Worth having both, in that order.
The physiological answer: late afternoon
Most measures of physical performance track core body temperature, which follows a daily rhythm — lowest a couple of hours before you wake, climbing across the day, peaking in the late afternoon or early evening, then falling through the night.
Warmer muscle is more efficient. Enzyme activity is higher, nerve conduction is faster, muscle is more compliant, joints move more freely. Which means that between roughly 4pm and 7pm, most people are measurably stronger, more powerful, and more flexible than at any other point in the day. Reaction time is quickest. Perceived exertion at a given workload is lowest — the same weight feels lighter.
Morning training runs against this. Core temperature is near its daily low, you are stiffer, and there is a real warm-up cost. If your single goal is maximum output on the bar, the late afternoon is the honest answer.
Why that answer is mostly irrelevant
The performance difference between a morning and an afternoon session is real but modest — a few percent for most people on most measures. Meaningful if you compete. Nearly meaningless if you are training for health, body composition, or general capacity.
Against that, consider what actually determines results: whether you train at all, consistently, for years.
Morning training has one enormous advantage that no physiological argument overcomes. It happens before the day has a chance to eat it. Nobody schedules a meeting over your 6am. Nothing runs late into it. You are not deciding whether to train after nine hours of work and a commute, at the exact moment your willpower is lowest.
If you train reliably at 6am and unreliably at 6pm, 6am is your optimal training time. The physiology is a rounding error compared to the adherence.
What each slot actually gives you
Morning. Highest adherence. Regular morning exercise is associated with lower waking cortisol over time and, in trials, better sleep quality. It also produces a strong early wake signal — training outdoors stacks it with light exposure, which is two circadian interventions in one session. Cost: you are working near your temperature low, so you need a longer, more deliberate warm-up, and maximal lifts will feel heavier.
Midday or early afternoon. A genuinely underrated slot. You get most of the temperature benefit, and it lands directly on the post-lunch circadian dip — training through the dip is one of the better ways to erase it without caffeine. Late afternoon. Peak performance. If you are chasing a number, this is when to chase it. Cost: it is the slot most likely to be eaten by work, family, or traffic.

Does evening training ruin sleep?
This is the question people actually have, and the received wisdom is out of date.
The old advice — no exercise within three or four hours of bed — has not held up well. Reviews of the evidence find that evening exercise generally does not meaningfully impair sleep quality for most people. It can shift circadian timing slightly later and raise core temperature temporarily, but the sleep-quality cost is small or absent.
What matters is the specifics:
Moderate evening exercise is fine, and often helpful. Core temperature rises during the session and then falls for the next 30 to 90 minutes. That falling temperature is itself a sleep-onset signal — finishing a moderate session two to three hours before bed can help you fall asleep rather than hinder it.
Genuinely high-intensity work close to bed is different. Intervals, heavy competitive efforts, or anything that leaves you wired at 10pm elevates sympathetic activity and adrenaline for longer. If you finish a hard session at 9:30pm and lie awake at 11 with your heart still up, that is a real effect and you should move the session earlier.
The confounds usually matter more than the training. Pre-workout supplements are frequently 200–300mg of caffeine, which at 7pm is still a meaningful dose at 3am — that is a caffeine problem wearing a training-timing costume. The practical rule: finish moderate sessions 2+ hours before bed, hard sessions 3+. Then judge by your own outcome rather than the rule.
Training and the night that follows
Exercise at any time of day improves sleep over the medium term. Moderate aerobic work increases slow-wave sleep — the deep, physically restorative stage — which is the mechanism behind most of the observed benefit.
The relationship runs both ways, and that is the part worth internalising. Training improves your sleep; your sleep determines what you get out of training. Adaptation happens overnight — growth hormone release, tissue repair, motor learning consolidation. Train hard and sleep badly and you have done the damage without collecting the repair.
Which makes the highest-leverage move for most people not moving the session, but protecting the night after it. How to actually decide
- When will you reliably show up? Answer honestly, then train then. This dominates everything else.
- Competing? Train at the time of day you will compete. Specificity beats general optimality.
- Chasing maximal strength with a flexible schedule? Late afternoon.
- Training in the evening? Leave 2–3 hours before bed, kill the late pre-workout caffeine, and check your own sleep rather than trusting a rule.
- Morning trainer? Warm up longer than feels necessary, and train outdoors when you can to collect the light.
The bottom line
Strength, power and flexibility peak in the late afternoon along with core body temperature, so that is the physiologically optimal window. The difference is a few percent, and it is dwarfed by whether you actually train consistently — so the best time is the one you will keep.
Evening training does not wreck sleep for most people; late high-intensity work and pre-workout caffeine do. Finish moderate sessions two hours before bed, hard ones three, and remember that the adaptation you are training for happens after you fall asleep, not in the gym.
