Cabin humidity on a long-haul flight typically runs between 10% and 20%. The Sahara averages around 25%.
That one number explains most of what happens to your nose in the air.
What the environment does to you
It dries the nasal lining. Mucus thickens, the mucociliary escalator that clears particles slows, and the tissue becomes irritated and prone to cracking. Hours of it leaves you congested, scratchy and occasionally bleeding.
Pressure changes swell the tissue. Cabin pressure is equivalent to roughly 6,000–8,000 feet of altitude. Nasal and sinus tissue responds to pressure change, and if you are already congested, the descent is the part that hurts.
You end up mouth breathing. A dry, swollen nose pushes you to your mouth, which dries your throat further, which is why you land feeling like you have been gargling sand.
Sitting upright makes sleep harder anyway, and mouth breathing in a seat is most of why people wake from plane naps feeling worse.
Where a strip actually helps
Genuinely useful in a narrow way, and honest about the limits.
If your nasal valve is contributing to the restriction — the soft sidewall about a centimetre inside the nostril that draws inward on inhalation — a strip opens it mechanically, and that works at altitude exactly as it does at home. On a dry, mildly congested nose, that mechanical margin is often the difference between nasal breathing and mouth breathing for six hours.
What it will not do: rehydrate the lining, thin mucus, reduce swelling, or help with ear and sinus pain on descent. Those are different problems. (Where a strip reaches and where it does not.)

What helps more
Saline nasal spray. The single most effective thing you can bring. Under 100ml, so it clears security. Use it every hour or two. It rehydrates the lining directly, which is the actual problem.
Drink water, steadily. More than feels necessary, and skip the alcohol — it is a diuretic and a vasodilator, so it dehydrates you and swells nasal tissue at the same time. It also relaxes the upper airway, which is why people snore so badly on planes. (What one drink costs you overnight.)
A nasal gel or a little petroleum jelly just inside the nostrils, sparingly. Holds moisture against the lining.
Skip the vents blowing dry air at your face.
Do not fly congested if you can avoid it, and if you must, talk to a pharmacist before flying with a blocked nose and ears. Descent with blocked eustachian tubes is genuinely painful and occasionally damaging.
Do not tape on a plane
Worth being direct about, because people ask.
Do not use mouth tape on a flight. Several reasons stack: cabin air is likely to have congested you, which is the one condition under which taping is always wrong; you may have had a drink; nausea is more likely; and you are in a confined public space where being unable to get your mouth open quickly is worse than it is in your own bed.
Taping is a sleep-only intervention for a controlled environment with a clear nose. A plane is neither. (The general rule.)
Landing well
The nose usually recovers within a day. A saline rinse on arrival helps, as does a humidifier in the hotel room if the air is dry.

The bottom line
The problem on a plane is humidity, not airway width. A strip helps if your nasal valve is part of your restriction, and it does nothing about the dryness that caused most of it.
Bring saline spray, drink water, skip the alcohol, and leave the tape at home.
