If you use mouth tape nightly, you are holding an adhesive against your skin for roughly 2,900 hours a year. It is reasonable to ask what is in it. Almost nobody does, and almost no brand volunteers the answer.
What PFAS are and why they turn up in adhesives
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are a class of several thousand synthetic chemicals built around carbon-fluorine bonds. That bond is among the strongest in organic chemistry, which is what makes them useful and what makes them persistent. Hence the nickname: forever chemicals.
They are used industrially for water resistance, grease resistance, and as processing aids — including in the manufacture of films, coatings and pressure-sensitive adhesives. That last category is why the question matters here.
The concern with PFAS is that they persist in the environment and accumulate in the body, and various compounds in the class have been associated with health effects in the research literature. Regulators in several jurisdictions have been progressively restricting them.
Whether a specific tape contains them is an empirical question. The problem is that almost nobody has run the test.
Why "non-toxic" on a label means nothing
There is no regulatory definition of "non-toxic," "clean," "natural" or "chemical-free" for a product like this. These are marketing terms, not claims that anyone verifies.
More specifically, none of them tells you whether the product was tested. A brand can describe its tape as non-toxic having never sent a sample to a laboratory, and it has broken no rule.
The distinction that matters is not what a brand asserts. It is whether it commissioned an analysis, and whether it published the result.
What a real PFAS test looks like
Worth knowing so you can tell a genuine claim from a decorative one.
The method. PFAS screening uses mass spectrometry — typically LC-MS/MS for the less volatile compounds and GC-MS for the more volatile ones. A serious screen uses both, because neither alone covers the class.
The scope. How many compounds were screened for? The class runs to thousands. A test for a handful of legacy compounds like PFOA and PFOS is not the same as a broad screen, and it is the kind of thing a brand can technically claim while testing almost nothing.
The subject. This is the one most people miss. Was the finished product tested, or only a component supplied by someone else? A certificate covering a raw material is not a certificate covering the tape you put on your face.
The standard. Testing performed under a recognised standard — EN 17681 is the relevant one for PFAS determination — is more meaningful than an unspecified in-house method.
Publication. Can you read the report, or are you reading a sentence about the report?
Where Titan sits on this
Being specific, because that is the whole point of the article.
Titan's bamboo silk mouth tape had its finished tape screened for 501 PFAS compounds by the WEIPU laboratory, using LC-MS/MS and GC-MS methods under the EN 17681 standards, with none detected.
Finished product, broad screen, named methods, named standard, published report. That combination is unusual in this category. (The reports are public if you want to read them yourself.)
Separately — and this is a different test that gets conflated with it — the adhesive has been through ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing for cytotoxicity, sensitization and skin irritation, scoring 0.0 out of 8 for irritation with zero sensitization reactions at 24 and 48 hours.
One honest caveat we repeat every time: that ISO 10993 testing was on the adhesive, and it was commissioned by the adhesive's manufacturer, Henkel, rather than by Titan. It is real testing on the component that touches your skin. It is not the finished tape being certified, and any brand implying otherwise — including any brand we sell — would be overstating.
The PFAS screen is the one that covers the finished product.
What to ask any brand, including this one
Four questions. A brand that has done the work can answer all four in a sentence:
- Was the finished product tested, or a component?
- How many compounds were screened, and by what method?
- Which laboratory, and under what standard?
- Can I read the report?
If the answer to the fourth is no, treat the first three as unverified. Published reports are not a courtesy — they are the difference between a claim and a fact.
Keeping this in proportion
We are not telling you your current tape is contaminated. We do not know, and neither does anyone else, because most of it has never been tested. That is the actual state of the category and it is worth stating plainly rather than turning into a scare.
What is fair to say: eight hours a night on facial skin is a meaningful exposure, the cost of testing is trivial relative to what brands spend on packaging, and a brand that has not tested has chosen not to.
If you would rather not think about it at all, that is a legitimate position too. Just do not mistake "non-toxic" on a box for evidence.
The bottom line
PFAS are used as processing aids in adhesive manufacture, so the question is reasonable. "Non-toxic" and "clean" are unregulated marketing words that tell you nothing about testing.
